Midwood on the Hudson is one of the Hudson Valley’s most storied private estates — a 12-bedroom Gilded Age mansion set on 70 acres of rolling river land, and one of the most distinctive Hudson Valley vacation rentals available for events and large group stays.
Built in 1885 and featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine, Midwood sits on the banks of the Hudson River in the heart of the Hudson Valley, minutes from Hudson, Red Hook, and Rhinebeck. Whether you’re planning a large group vacation rental for 20+, a family reunion, a Hudson Valley wedding, or a corporate retreat, Midwood offers something no hotel or modern rental can: genuine history, genuine beauty, and genuine space.
The estate includes The Big House (12 bedrooms, sleeps 20+), The Grove (a private cottage for smaller parties), a pool, tennis court, and expansive grounds that have hosted generations of gatherings.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt rode the carriage road behind the Big House while courting Eleanor. Today, your family can walk the same path.
Once part of a massive 160,000-acre estate, Midwood is a shining example of how elite Hudson River families lived in the Gilded Age. History happened here: Built by a grandson of Robert R. Livingston who helped Thomas Jefferson draft the Declaration of Independence. Franklin Delano Roosevelt travelled Midwood’s carriage road while courting his soon-to-be-bride Eleanor.

Featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine (September 2001) the 12-bedroom Big House overlooking the river works beautifully for everything from large group gatherings to quiet moments reading by the fire. Iconic views of the Hudson and the mountains beyond are magical, especially at sunset. (Ships sail by day and night, delighting children of all ages.)
Smaller groups (1-4 people) may prefer the Grove, a cottage by a picturesque pond. Enjoy the Grove’s sauna, outdoor patio, wood-burning fireplace and EV charger.

For generations Midwood’s landscapes have hosted gatherings and created memories that last a lifetime.
Guests enjoy unlimited access to a large swimming pool tucked in the woods, tennis court, waterfront and walking paths.

Small gatherings can often be accommodated during an overnight stay. We’re happy to recommend trusted local caterers and private chefs to support intimate celebrations.
Any gathering over 25 people, or events that involve expanded use of the house and grounds beyond standard lodging, require prior approval and a separately negotiated agreement. Please reach out in advance to discuss your plans so we can confirm what’s possible and ensure the best experience for everyone.
Due to its age (built in 1850 and added to bit by bit) Midwood’s Big House does not have central air conditioning. Window air-conditioning units are installed in bedrooms during the summer months for guest comfort.
The house’s common areas tend to remain naturally cool, even in warmer weather, thanks to the scale, construction, and airflow of the building.
